NIGERIA: Nigeria Police Partner INTERPOL To Boost Regional Security And Data Sharing

By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
In a significant move to bolster internal security and law enforcement, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has partnered with the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL), to enhance regional security and improve data-sharing capabilities.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who also serves as Chairman of the West African Chiefs of Police Committee (WAPCCO), disclosed this during a courtesy visit by INTERPOL’s Executive Director of Police Services, Cyril Gout, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The visit marked the formal handover of the West African Police Information System (WAPIS) to the Nigerian Government. The Ministry of Police Affairs received the system from INTERPOL and has since domiciled it within the Nigeria Police Force.
Egbetokun emphasized that WAPIS is designed to strengthen police information systems across West Africa by harmonizing data management, enhancing data collection, and facilitating seamless information sharing among law enforcement agencies in the sub-region.
A statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, highlighted the Inspector-General’s appreciation of INTERPOL’s crucial role in international security cooperation and his assurance of Nigeria’s commitment to fully implementing the WAPIS programme.
“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to maximizing the potential of all three levels of WAPIS. We believe this system will be a game-changer in Nigeria’s fight against crime,” the statement read.
