NIGERIA: Nigeria Police Council Endorses Disu as Inspector-General of Police

The Nigeria Police Council has unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police.
The decision was reached on Monday during a council meeting held at the State House, Abuja, clearing the way for his swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council meeting.
The meeting was presided over by the President and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions.
Also present were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Esther Didi Walson-Jack.
President Tinubu appointed Disu following the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, commended Disu’s record of service, highlighting his leadership as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021.
He said: “His tenure earned recognition for excellence in crime control and effective policing.”
Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, described the appointment as a reflection of Disu’s distinguished professional career.
He said: “The appointment is based on an excellent service record and demonstrated competence.”
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, also praised the new police chief, recalling his service in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and head of the anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015.
He said: “He demonstrated efficiency as a crime fighter and ensured strategic impact in addressing security concerns.”
Governor Peter Mbah seconded the motion endorsing the appointment during the council session.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in May 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and rose through the ranks with professional training in public administration, criminology, forensic investigation, legal psychology, security management and entrepreneurship.
Before his appointment, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Lagos.
