NIGERIA: NEMA, Lagos Fire Service Control Chemical Warehouse Fire on Badagry Expressway

Emergency responders on Saturday contained a fire outbreak at a chemical warehouse factory located beside SAPID along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, originated from a warehouse storing chemical substances and rapidly spread to adjoining buildings housing bathroom fittings and doors.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Territorial Office, confirmed the development in a situation report released on Sunday, noting that response teams were immediately deployed to the scene in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency stakeholders.
The statement reads: “Upon receiving the distress alert, NEMA LTO immediately deployed response personnel to the scene, working in close collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other relevant emergency stakeholders to contain the situation.”
Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was triggered by a suspected container explosion within the chemical storage facility, with highly flammable materials contributing to the rapid spread of the flames to nearby structures.

Joint emergency response teams were able to bring the fire under control, while personnel remain at the site to extinguish residual hotspots and prevent any possible re-ignition.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
