NIGERIA: NDLEA Cross River Commander Ogbonna Maurice Found Dead In Hotel Room
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the sudden death of its Cross River State Commander, Chief Narcotic Officer Ogbonna Maurice Uzoma.
The disclosure was made in a statement signed by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja.
The news of Ogbonna’s passing was received by the Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), while attending a retreat for heads of agencies in Maiduguri, Borno State. Ogbonna, who resumed office in Calabar on August 18, 2025, had only recently taken over leadership of the Cross River Command.
According to NDLEA, the late commander was due to lead his officers on scheduled engagements by 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, but failed to respond to calls or knocks on his hotel room door earlier that morning.
Hotel staff eventually gained access to the room through the ceiling, where his lifeless body was discovered. The Cross River State Police Commissioner promptly visited the scene as investigations into the cause of death commenced.
To support the ongoing investigation, Marwa directed the Zonal Commander of Zone 14, ACGN Mathew Ewah, to relocate to Calabar.
While commiserating with the bereaved family, Marwa described the death as a great loss to the agency, praying for God’s comfort for the family and eternal rest for the deceased.
