NIGERIA: NCC Commissions Ultra-modern ICT Park at University of Ibadan

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Tuesday commissioned a state-of-the-art Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Park at the University of Ibadan.
Speaking at the unveiling, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, represented by the Head of Technical Standards, Engr. Abraham Osadami described the facility as a “one-stop hub for innovation” aimed at advancing research, entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies in the Southwest region.
Osadami said; “The ICT Park is part of a broader initiative comprising six flagship digital infrastructure projects across the country. It is designed to foster innovation, strengthen research capacity, and provide homegrown digital solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.”
Osadami, an alumnus of the university, reflected on the personal and national significance of the project.
“Having passed through the Great Wall 32 years ago, this moment represents the fulfilment of a national assignment. This is not just a building; it’s a spark for a digital revolution.”
He emphasized the strategic choice of the University of Ibadan as the project site, statin its historical role in education and research.
“UI is not only Nigeria’s oldest university; it is a launchpad of ideas. Whatever begins here has the power to initiate real change in society,” he said.
According to the Commission, the facility will support the development and deployment of cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). It will also serve as a collaborative space for students, researchers, startups, and policy leaders.
The ICT Park includes a 100-seat main hall, five ICT hub halls, a 24-seater lounge with eight dual-computer workstations, multiple collaborative spaces, and administrative offices. It is equipped with high-capacity computing systems, intelligent networking, and digital infrastructure aligned with the evolving needs of a modern digital economy.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, described the commissioning as a historic moment for the institution.
Adebowale said: “This ICT Park is a beacon of progress, a transformative gift to Nigeria’s premier university. It will bridge the digital divide, revolutionize teaching and learning, and provide a collaborative environment to tackle global challenges.”
He added, “The world is undergoing a digital industrial revolution, and UI recognizes its critical role in preparing for the future. This investment is not just in UI, it is in Nigeria’s future.”
The NCC called on students, faculty, and the Oyo State community to take ownership of the facility, describing it as a shared legacy and a tool for inclusive development.
