NIGERIA: Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Senate Office Reopened After Months-Long Lockout
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The National Assembly on Tuesday witnessed a dramatic turn in the standoff between Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, as security personnel led by the Sergeant-at-Arms officially unsealed Office 205 in the Senate wing.
For months, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s office had remained under lock and key, sparking speculation of political persecution and drawing sharp criticism from her supporters, who argued the move was a calculated attempt to silence one of the Red Chamber’s most outspoken female lawmakers.
The closure also raised concerns over the lack of representation for her Kogi Central constituents.
In a live video streamed from the National Assembly by one of the senator’s aides, jubilant constituents were seen carrying placards with inscriptions demanding her full reinstatement.
Their celebration marked the end of a tense chapter that had fueled divisions within the Senate.
Sources inside the National Assembly confirmed that the decision to reopen the office followed weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations and mounting pressure from lawmakers and civil society groups, who branded the shutdown as unconstitutional.
Political analysts commenting on the matter on Facebook say the development carries weight far beyond the physical reopening of an office. “To those who thought her voice could be muted, the microphone just got louder,” a supporter remarked outside the Senate wing.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, widely known for her fiery advocacy on governance reforms and women’s rights, is expected to address the media in the coming days.
Observers say her next moves, particularly her working relationship with the Senate leadership, will be closely monitored.
The reopening, many believe, underscores a broader political message, in Nigeria’s turbulent political arena, persistence and public pressure can prove stronger than opposition.
