By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed regulated products valued at ₦55 billion during a large-scale destruction exercise in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The items destroyed comprised unregistered, fake, banned, adulterated and expired products, including damaged and expired goods voluntarily submitted to the agency by more than 70 compliant companies, non-governmental organisations and trade unions.

NAFDAC said the exercise was carried out to prevent the re-entry of dangerous and substandard products into the market, as part of its ongoing regulatory enforcement and public health protection efforts.
Speaking during the exercise, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the destruction underscored the agency’s commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of Nigerians by ensuring that harmful products are permanently removed from circulation.
She urged religious and community leaders, health practitioners and members of the public to play an active role in educating their families and communities on the risks associated with patronising unqualified and unauthorised medicine and food dealers.
Prof. Adeyeye stressed that protecting public health requires collective responsibility, noting that sustained collaboration between regulators, stakeholders and the public remains critical to curbing the circulation of fake and substandard products across the country.
