NIGERIA: NAF Deploys Surveillance Aircraft to Track Abducted Oyo Teachers, Pupils
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The Nigerian Air Force (Nigerian Air Force) has deployed an aerial surveillance aircraft to support ongoing search-and-rescue operations for teachers and pupils abducted in Oyo State.
The victims were kidnapped from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities in Oriire Local Government Area, prompting intensified security efforts to secure their safe release.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the deployment followed swift intervention by the Air Force after the incident was reported.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, disclosed that the Air Force immediately activated a surveillance platform, which has since been providing intelligence to security agencies involved in the rescue operation.
“The NAF promptly deployed an aerial surveillance platform immediately after the abduction was reported, providing critical intelligence to support search-and-rescue operations,” Makinde was quoted as saying.
He added that intelligence gathered from the surveillance missions has continued to assist security operatives in tracking developments and coordinating efforts aimed at securing the release of the victims.
Makinde appealed to residents of the affected communities to remain calm and support ongoing security operations, assuring that all necessary resources are being deployed to ensure a successful rescue mission.
The governor also commended the Chief of the Air Staff and the Nigerian Air Force for their swift response, noting that the surveillance support was provided while the state’s newly acquired aerial assets were still being prepared for deployment.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to working with other security agencies to ensure the safe return of the abducted teachers and pupils.
He also expressed solidarity with the government and people of Oyo State, adding that the Air Force would continue to support national efforts to address insecurity across the country.
Reports indicate that the attack occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed men invaded schools in Oriire Local Government Area and abducted 39 students and seven teachers, totalling 46 victims.
Security agencies are continuing coordinated operations aimed at
securing their release.
