NIGERIA: Lawmakers, INEC Push For Amendments To Electoral Act At Lagos Retreat

The second day of the ongoing retreat by the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters in Lagos has featured intense deliberations on proposed changes to the 2022 Nigerian Electoral Act.
The retreat brought together lawmakers and top officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, led the session.
Also present were Hon. Adebayo Balogun, Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, and INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
Discussions centred on refining specific sections of the Electoral Act to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
The stakeholders examined operational challenges faced during recent elections and highlighted legal provisions in need of urgent review.
The session aimed to lay the groundwork for legislative amendments that would boost transparency, efficiency, and credibility in future elections.
