NIGERIA: LAUTECH Suspends Activities After Student’s Death In Road Accident
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Iseyin campus, Oyo State, has ordered a two-week suspension of academic activities following the tragic death of a 200-level student who was killed in a road accident near the campus.
The deceased, identified as a student from the Department of Agricultural Economics, reportedly lost his life on Friday morning after being hit by a commercial vehicle along the Iseyin–Saki Road. The driver, whose identity remains unknown, was said to have fled the scene immediately after the incident.
It was gathered that the unfortunate event sparked outrage among students, some of whom set the commercial vehicle ablaze in protest of what they described as recurring reckless driving along the route.
Confirming the development in a statement on Saturday, the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Olayinka Balogun, said the university community was deeply saddened by the loss and had decided to suspend activities on the Iseyin campus to allow students and staff to recover from the emotional impact of the tragedy.
Balogun said: “The management of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin. This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over our university community, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.”
He added that all students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources are to proceed on a two-week break, effective immediately, while essential service officers will receive separate instructions regarding their duties.
Academic activities are expected to resume on Monday, November 24, 2025, according to the Registrar’s statement.
Balogun urged students to remain calm, support one another, and honour the memory of their late colleague.
