The Lagos State Government will on Friday, October 17, 2025, officially launch the Omi Eko Project, a major initiative aimed at transforming water transportation across the state.
The project, spearheaded by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), is supported with €410 million in funding under the Global Gateway Initiative, backed by the European Union, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
According to a statement by the state government, the initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to creating a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation system in Lagos.
The Omi Eko Project is designed to enhance mobility, reduce road congestion, and promote cleaner, greener transport through electric-powered ferries and upgraded infrastructure.
The statement reads: ” Under the project, 78 high-capacity electric ferries, each accommodating between 50 and 200 passengers, the construction and modernization of terminals and floating jetties, dredging and channel works covering approximately 140 kilometers across 15 routes, and the introduction of digital ticketing systems for seamless passenger boarding.”
LASG further added that, the project will strengthen safety regulations, capacity building, and operational oversight through LASWA to ensure efficiency and sustainability.
Implementation will be carried out in phases over the next six years, positioning Lagos as a model for integrated and eco-friendly transport infrastruc
