Nigeria – Lagos State Government Addresses School Fees Hike Protest

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has responded to recent protests by parents regarding the increase in boarding fees at model colleges.
The Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Ganiu Lawal, issued a statement today addressing the concerns raised by the parents.
Lawal acknowledged the dissenting views on the decision to raise boarding fees, describing it as a difficult but necessary measure.
He emphasized that the welfare of students remains the Ministry’s top priority, with the Lagos State Government fully supporting this stance.
According to Lawal, boarding school enrolment is a voluntary choice, and parents are expected to cover the associated fees.
The increased boarding fee, which is paid each term, is primarily allocated for feeding, janitorial services, and other miscellaneous expenses related to maintaining hostel facilities.
Lawal noted that despite the fee increment, students in model colleges continue to benefit from various forms of free education.
This includes free tuition, educational infrastructure, technology support such as free devices, adequate security, and the state’s coverage of WAEC examination fees.
He further pointed out that the cost of N35,000 for three months of boarding is competitive when compared to similar facilities in federal and state public schools across the country.
He maintained that, given the rising cost of food and other expenses, the Lagos State Ministry remains considerate in its fee structure.
“The Ministry remains committed to ensuring that the quality of education and student welfare are not compromised, despite the financial adjustments,” he noted.
