NIGERIA: Lagos Launches QR Code System To Curb Quackery In Health Facilities
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The Lagos State Government has introduced a QR code verification system, across public and private health facilities as part of a statewide effort to eliminate quackery and enhance transparency in the state’s healthcare delivery.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), aims to ensure that residents can verify the accreditation status of healthcare providers before accessing medical services.
Speaking at the rollout of the pilot phase, the Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, Dr. Abiola Idowu, explained that QR code stickers are now being displayed at health facilities.
These codes can be scanned using smartphones to reveal critical information about each centre.
Dr. Idowu said: “The QR code system is a game-changer in our mission to uphold the highest standards of healthcare delivery in Lagos. By digitising and publicly displaying key details, we are sending a clear message: only registered and accredited facilities are allowed to operate in this state.”
According to HEFAMAA, the QR system provides access to a facility’s name, registration number, licence renewal status, location, phone number, category, list of accredited services, and names of contact personnel. Users can also view service ratings and submit feedback directly to the agency.
Dr. Idowu emphasized that the move is part of HEFAMAA’s broader strategy to clamp down on unaccredited clinics and unethical practices.
“We are reinforcing our zero-tolerance policy on quackery and sharp practices,” she said.
The agency encouraged residents to use the system not only for information but also as a tool to report poor or suspicious services.
She added: “This is not just about technology; it’s about empowering Lagosians to protect themselves and hold healthcare providers accountable.”
HEFAMAA reiterated its commitment to public health through strict monitoring, regulatory enforcement, and innovative digital tools aimed at improving accountability and service delivery in the health sector.
