NIGERIA: Journalists Mourn Former NAWOJ Chairperson, Stella Okoh Esene

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mrs. Stella Okoh Esene, a former Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter.
Mrs. Esene, aged 64, reportedly passed away on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a prolonged illness.
Until her death, she worked with True Verdict Online Newspaper following her retirement from the Federal Ministry of Information.
In a condolence statement signed by the Council’s Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, released on Monday, the NUJ FCT Council described her demise as a monumental loss to the journalism profession, particularly to women in the media.
“The NUJ FCT Council is deeply pained by this loss. She was a pillar of strength and inspiration to many journalists, particularly the younger generation. Her leadership, courage, and commitment to the ideals of truth and fairness in journalism remain exemplary,” the statement read in part.
Born in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, Mrs. Esene was celebrated for her passion, professionalism, and commitment to the advancement of ethical journalism and gender equity. During her tenure as NAWOJ Chairperson, she championed the empowerment of women journalists and promoted professionalism across the FCT and beyond.
The NUJ FCT Council prayed for the repose of her soul and asked God to grant her family, friends, and colleagues the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
According to the statement, burial arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
