NIGERIA: JAMB Restores FUTA Graduate’s Portal After Fake Admission Flag
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has reinstated the admission status of Jamiu Basola, a Civil Engineering graduate of the Federal University of Technology Akure, after initially labeling his admission as fake.
Basola, who graduated in 2024 with a CGPA of 4.41, said he took the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in 2017 and was admitted into FUTA in 2018.
His trouble began during final clearance for the National Youth Service Corps when he was told by the Student Affairs Division that his NYSC mobilisation was rejected.
He was later advised to check the JAMB matriculation list, where his name was flagged and marked as having a fake admission.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Basola confirmed that his portal had been unlocked and his name was now visible on the matriculation list, a requirement for NYSC mobilisation.
“My portal was locked. But now, I am able to log in. I can now reprint my documents. My name was not on the matriculation list before, but now it has changed,” he said.
The National Association of Nigerian Students also confirmed the development in a statement issued by its National Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Ajasa.
Ajasa described the resolution as a victory for justice and student welfare. He credited the intervention by the NANS national leadership under President Olushola Oladoja for pushing the issue until JAMB restored Basola’s records.
He noted that Basola’s situation was not only about one student but represented the plight of many Nigerian students whose academic journeys are often threatened by institutional failures.
Ajasa also praised the FUTA Civil Engineering Department for its efforts, including writing to JAMB to clarify Basola’s admission.
He said the association would continue to monitor the case to ensure Basola is included in the next NYSC mobilisation batch.
Basola’s case gained public attention after he posted his ordeal on social media, revealing that JAMB had declared his admission invalid seven years after he began his studies.
In response, JAMB had described him as an “unknown entity” and claimed that the admission letter he presented did not come from its system.
The Board dismissed emotional appeals tied to Basola’s personal background and asked him to explain how he obtained the document.
