NIGERIA: INEC Says No Decision Yet On Labour Party Leadership Crisis
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied reports claiming it has recognised new leaders for the Labour Party.
In a statement released on Thursday, signed by the commission’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, it described the media claims as false and misleading.
The reports alleged that the Commission had confirmed certain individuals as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party.
They also suggested that a particular person had been restored as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party.
INEC stated that it has not taken any decision regarding the leadership of either party.
It explained that the names currently listed on its official website for the Labour Party were uploaded based on a previous court order.
The Commission clarified that this order has no link with the recent judgement of the Supreme Court concerning the party.
It also noted that the name of the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was never removed or reinstated.
According to INEC, the Commission is reviewing the Supreme Court judgement carefully.
It said its final decision will be made public after due consideration.
