By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise in Anambra State by three days.
This was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee.
According to the Commission, the registration exercise, which was initially scheduled to end on Thursday, will now continue until Sunday, 20 July 2025.
The extension follows appeals from citizens across the state.
INEC said it was pleased with the turnout of registrants and the peaceful conduct of the exercise across all 326 registration centres in Anambra.
As of Wednesday, 16 July, a total of 96,085 new voters had registered in just nine days, averaging over 10,600 registrations per day.
In addition, 12,595 people applied for transfers of their voter registration, while 7,061 sought updates or replacements of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards.
Preliminary data shows that 56,017 of the new registrants, representing 58 percent, are female.
Also, 50,429 of them, or 52.48 percent, are youths aged between 18 and 34.
After the CVR exercise ends, the Commission will display the register for claims and objections as required by law.
This will be followed by a further clean-up of the data using the Automated Biometric Identification System.
INEC also disclosed that five additional associations have submitted letters of intent to be registered as political parties.
This brings the total number of applications so far to 134.
The details of the new associations, including their names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leaderships, have been published on INEC’s website and platforms.
The Commission assured that it will continue to keep the public informed on all developments.
