NIGERIA: IGP Reorganizes Police Mobile Force to Boost Internal Security

By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
In a decisive move to strengthen internal security and restore operational effectiveness, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced a sweeping reorganization of the Police Mobile Force (PMF).
Speaking during a conference with PMF Squadron Commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, the IGP emphasized the urgent need to reposition the unit in line with its original mandate as the Nigeria Police Force’s elite tactical arm.
This was made known in a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on it’s official X handle
IGP Egbetokun said: “The PMF was established as a strike force to swiftly respond to riots, emergencies, and violent threats. It is unfortunate that over time, many personnel have been diverted to non-core duties, including escort and guard services for private individuals and VIPs. This trend has seriously undermined the operational effectiveness of the unit,” stated.
To reverse the drift, the police chief announced key reforms aimed at restoring discipline and enhancing the operational readiness of the PMF.
These include the immediate withdrawal of personnel from unauthorized assignments, the enforcement of quarterly ethics and professionalism training, and the mandatory standby of combat-ready units across all PMF Squadrons for rapid tactical deployment.
IGP added: “The PMF must return to its rightful role as a disciplined and dependable tactical arm. All commanders are hereby directed to ensure regular training, routine inspections, and mentorship programs that uphold discipline, respect for human rights, and operational excellence.’
Dr. Egbetokun further warned that PMF Squadron Commanders would be held accountable for the conduct of their personnel, stressing that proactive leadership and integrity would be critical in the new dispensation.
He also revealed plans to introduce “new leadership strategies and capacity-building initiatives that will better position the PMF to meet modern security challenges and align with global best practices.”
The IGP expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his support, and acknowledged the contributions of international partners toward enhancing the training and technical capacity of the Force.
He mentioned: “I urge all PMF Squadron Commanders to embrace this reform initiative not just as an administrative directive, but as a professional and moral responsibility”.
The reorganization is expected to breathe new life into the operations of the Police Mobile Force, a crucial unit in Nigeria’s fight against internal threats and violent crimes.
