Nigeria – IGP Orders Movement Restriction in Edo Ahead of Governorship Poll
By Utebor Paul, Nigeria
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a restriction on all forms of vehicular movement in Edo State as part of security measures ahead of the upcoming governorship election.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the restriction will be in effect from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on election day. This directive covers all forms of transportation, including roads and waterways, to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
However, the IGP clarified that essential service providers, such as accredited media personnel, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders, will be exempted from the restriction.
To further safeguard the integrity of the election, the IGP has placed a ban on all security aides and escorts accompanying VIPs to polling booths and collation centers. The use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles has also been prohibited during this period, and quasi-security outfits will not be allowed to operate.
The statement stressed the need for special provisions for vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, and those with mobility challenges, ensuring that polling units remain accessible to all voters across urban and rural areas.
Additionally, the IGP, through Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Frank Emeka Mba, in charge of the Edo Gubernatorial Election, appealed to residents to avoid making prank calls to emergency lines. Citizens were advised to use text messages when reporting incidents to the police for more effective communication. The designated election lines for assistance are DIG Frank Mba on 07025000383 and AIG Benneth Igwe on 09085000029, while the general control room numbers are 08077773721 and 08037646272.
The Nigeria Police Force also encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity or acts that may disrupt the election, assuring that anyone found violating electoral laws will face the full weight of the law.
The IGP called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly and abide by the laws guiding the election, as the force remains committed to ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process in Edo State.
