NIGERIA: ICPC To Launch Anti-Corruption Programme For Local Governments

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is set to launch the Accountability and Corruption Prevention Programme for Local Governments (CPP-LG) to address systemic corruption and enhance transparency at the grassroots level across Nigeria.
This initiative follows recent legal confirmations of local government autonomy, expected to improve their financial independence and operational efficiency.
ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, announced this on Wednesday at a summit organized by the Gombe State government, themed “Local Government Autonomy, Fiscal Responsibility, and Sustainable Development.”
Speaking on the topic “Enhancing Transparency and Accountability in Local Governance: Strategies for Combating Corruption in Nigeria,” the ICPC Chairman emphasized the crucial role of local governments in service delivery.
While speaking, he lamented the deep-rooted challenges of embezzlement, nepotism, contract inflation, and resource misallocation that hinder local government effectiveness.
He said; “Systemic corruption weakens local governance, leading to inefficiencies, resource wastage, and public distrust. A lack of transparency and accountability further enables these issues.”
Dr Aliyu further noted that to address these concerns, the CPP-LG will implement measures such as regular audits, public reporting, enhanced financial autonomy, citizen participation, and institutional reforms to strengthen governance at the local level.
Dr. Aliyu stated that the ICPC is already monitoring local government performance and will officially launch the programme as part of broader anti-corruption efforts in this tier of government.
He asserted; “A transparent and accountable local government system is key to fighting corruption and fostering a fairer society. By strengthening legal frameworks, leveraging technology, encouraging civic engagement, and building institutional capacity, Nigeria can create an environment where integrity thrives.”
He, however, called for collective action from government agencies, civil society, the private sector, and the international community in tackling corruption.
“The fight against corruption requires unity and dedication. Through challenges, the rewards of a corruption-free society—where resources serve the public good and every citizen thrives—are immeasurable. With sustained effort, Nigeria can build a brighter and more prosperous future for all,” Dr. Aliyu concluded.
