NIGERIA: ICPC Confirms Custody Of Former Kaduna Governor Nasiru El-Rufai Over Ongoing Investigations
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed that former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasiru El-Rufai is in its custody as of the close of work on Wednesday.
In a brief press release issued Thursday by J. Okor Odey, Head of Media and Public Communications and Spokesperson for the ICPC, the anti-graft agency stated that El-Rufai is being held in connection with ongoing investigations.
The statement did not disclose specific allegations, the nature of the probe, or the duration of his detention.
The development follows months of speculation and public commentary regarding potential scrutiny of the former governor’s administration, particularly in areas of procurement, contract awards, and financial management during his two terms in office from 2015 to 2023. El-Rufai has previously denied wrongdoing in various public statements and has been vocal on national issues since leaving office.
Sources close to the ICPC told journalists that the former governor was invited for questioning earlier this week and voluntarily reported to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. He has not been formally charged as of Thursday morning.
Neither El-Rufai nor his legal team has issued a public comment on the custody confirmation at the time of this report. The ICPC reiterated its commitment to due process and transparency in all investigations.
This is the latest high-profile case involving a former governor under the watch of the anti-corruption agencies, following similar probes into other past state executives in recent years. Further updates are expected as the investigat
ion progresses.
