Nigerian comedian, Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basket mouth, has shed light on his recent comments about Nigerian Afrobeat star Wizkid, revealing that it was a deliberate move to draw attention to his Canadian tour.

In an interview on Backstage Banter with Isi Ijewere during the Toronto leg of his tour, Basket mouth explained that his comments during Davido and Chioma’s wedding on 25th June 2024, were a calculated marketing strategy.

He had lamented the challenge of promoting his tour amid the overwhelming social media buzz surrounding the wedding.

Basket mouth noted that even Wizkid’s usual social media activities failed to capture public interest, due to the wedding’s dominance in the news cycle.

His remarks, perceived as a slight against Wizkid, provoked a strong backlash from the singer’s fans, who threatened to “cancel” the comedian.

“Wizkid is my guy… that was a marketing technique,” Basket mouth clarified. “But I knew it was going to be edgy. I knew it was going to hit people. I knew they were going to get upset, and they did exactly what I wanted them to do. It worked.”

Basket mouth’s comments have sparked widespread discussion, highlighting the lengths to which celebrities might go to stay in the public eye and promote their projects.
