NIGERIA: High Court Halts Police Enforcement Of Tinted Glass Permit Policy Nationwide
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The High Court of Delta State has granted an ex-parte injunction restraining the Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force from resuming enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Policy across the country.
The order was issued on Wednesday, by Hon. Justice Joe Egwu in a ruling that also bars the police from harassing, arresting, detaining, or extorting citizens and motorists over the policy.

The injunction is to subsist pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit filed by Mr. Israel Joe, a Nigerian citizen who approached the court challenging the policy.
Mr. Joe was represented in court by a team of lawyers led by Kunle Edun, SAN.
By this ruling, the Nigeria Police Force’s recent announcement of its intention to resume enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy effective January 2, 2026, has been halted.
The court’s decision comes amid growing public debate over the policy, which has been criticised for potential abuse and extortion by law enforcement officers.
The substantive suit is expected to determine the legality and constitutionality of the policy.
