Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died.
Buhari passed away on Sunday afternoon at a clinic in London, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
His death was confirmed in a brief statement by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, who posted the announcement on social media.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, had reportedly been ill for several weeks before his passing.
He had a long history in Nigerian politics, previously serving as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 before returning as a democratically elected president decades later.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements and official tributes are expected in the coming hours.
