NIGERIA: FG, UNILAG, University of Birmingham Sign Landmark Transnational Education Agreement

The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Lagos and the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, to expand access to globally recognised tertiary education programmes in the country.
The agreement, signed under Nigeria’s Transnational Education framework, is expected to strengthen skills development and position Nigeria as a hub for academic excellence, research and innovation.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, following the formal signing of the agreement involving the two universities and key stakeholders in Nigeria’s education sector.
According to the Minister, the partnership aligns with the National Education Sector Renewal Initiative and reflects the Federal Government’s broader vision of revitalising the education sector in line with national development goals.
The minister said: “This partnership expands access to globally recognised programmes, strengthens skills development, and positions Nigeria as a hub for academic excellence, research, and innovation.”
Professor Mamman noted that the collaboration is consistent with the education vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing the central role of education in nation-building and youth empowerment.
“Education is the bedrock of national development, and our youth remain the heartbeat of the nation.”
The agreement is expected to create new academic opportunities for Nigerian students while strengthening institutional cooperation between Nigerian and international universities.
The Minister further commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, Professor Adam Tickell, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, for their roles in advancing the partnership. He also acknowledged the contributions of the National Universities Commission and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
The presence of the Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria at the signing ceremony was described as a reflection of the growing strength of Nigeria’s international educational partnerships.
