The Federal Government of Nigeria has lifted the ban on mining exploration in Zamfara State, following a thorough review of the state’s security atmosphere.
The ban, which was initially imposed in 2019 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, was part of measures put in place to address insecurity in the state.
In 2021, Zamfara was also declared a “no-fly zone” to further reduce the rate of criminal activities.
In a statement released on Sunday, the media aide to the Minister of Solid Minerals, Segun Tomori announced the decision.
The Minister, Dele Alake, explained that the President and the National Security Adviser had thoroughly assessed the improved security conditions and approved the resumption of mining activities in Zamfara.
“The Federal Government has lifted the ban on mining exploration activities in Zamfara State, citing significant improvements in the security situation across the state,” the statement read.
The government further emphasised that Zamfara, rich in gold, lithium, and copper, stands to contribute immensely to the nation’s economy through the rejuvenated mining operations.
Further details are expected soon the media aide announced.
