In a bold step toward modernizing Nigeria’s education sector, the Federal Government has launched the National Smart Learning Initiative, aimed at digitalizing public schools across the country and distributing interactive smart boards to enhance classroom learning.
The initiative was officially flagged off at Queen’s College, Lagos by the Honorable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, CON. He described the programme as a “major step toward modern, interactive, and globally competitive learning environments.”
Under the scheme, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), working with the Ministry of Education, will roll out multiple components, including expanding broadband access, enhancing digital literacy, and implementing teacher training programmes.
Key projects underpinning the initiative include the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD), efforts under NEDI (Nigeria Education Digital Initiative), and a $40 million ICT–Development partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD) to strengthen ICT infrastructure in schools.
