NIGERIA: Federal Government Shuts Down 41 Unity Schools Over Rising Insecurity
By Lisa Chankat, Nigeria
The Nigerian Federal Government has ordered the closure of forty-one Federal Unity Colleges across the country, due to mounting security concerns.
The closure of the schools followed the abduction of 25 school girls from Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) Maga in Danko, Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, last Sunday.
Meanwhile, on Friday, a similar incident was reported in Niger state where 200 pupils and about 10 staff from St. Mary’s School in Agwara Local Government Area of the State were also abducted.
In a reaction to the incidents, Amnesty International described the incidents as horrific and a violation of the rights of children to education.
It says 230 abducted children were in captivity of gunmen this week and the incident interrupted the education of thousands of children because of the closure of hundreds of schools in Katsina, Plateau and other states.
“The latest wave of horrific attacks on schools in Kebbi and Niger state, clearly shows Nigerian authorities never cared to learn any lessons from such previous incidents in which some school children were also killed by gunmen.”
“School children in some parts of northern Nigeria are constantly at risk of death or abduction. More than 780 children were abducted for ransom in 2021 during mass attacks on schools or religious institutions, with some of the children killed during the attacks,” said Isa Sanusi Director Amnesty International Nigeria
In a circular to all Principals of unity colleges signed by the Director, senior Secondary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, the government explains that sequel to recent security challenges in parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breaches, the Minister of Education has approved the immediate closure.
