The Nigeria Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a statement confirming the spread of a newly detected COVID-19 variant, XEC, which has been identified in 29 countries globally. The ministry advised Nigerians to remain vigilant.
In a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Alaba Balogun, the ministry emphasised that there are currently no traces of the XEC variant in Nigeria.
He said: “The XEC variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.”
The ministry urged Nigerians and the general public not to panic but to continue observing universal precautions as practiced during the COVID-19 pandemic. These include regular handwashing and other preventive measures.
Balogun further stated that the government has stepped up surveillance at all entry points into the country and upgraded federal tertiary hospitals by establishing isolation centers, molecular laboratories, and intensive care units equipped with ventilators.
The ministry also addressed misinformation circulating on social media, refuting claims that COVID-19 has returned. It urged the public to disregard such false information.
Nigerians are advised to go about their normal business while maintaining caution and adhering to public health guidelines.
