The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike, has approved the recruitment of 34 resident doctors.
The newly employed doctors represent the first batch of 60 medical residency trainees set to be deployed across eight faculties and specialties in FCTA hospitals.
This recruitment marks a major step in medical workforce expansion, extending beyond the Health Management Board to create more opportunities for doctors while strengthening healthcare services in the territory.
Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, announced the development in a statement on Wednesday.
He emphasized that the initiative aims to inject more skilled medical professionals into the system to improve service delivery.
According to Olayinka, the 34 recruited doctors include five specialists in psychiatry, four in internal medicine, one in general surgery, one in anaesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology, and nine in obstetrics and gynaecology.
He further disclosed that the FCTA Civil Service Commission is set to begin the recruitment process for the remaining 26 resident doctors, which will include one for psychiatry, four for internal medicine, eight for general surgery, five for anaesthesiology, and eight for paediatrics.
“This employment drive aligns with the FCT administration’s commitment to improving the healthcare system by ensuring the availability of skilled medical professionals across various specialities,” the statement added.
The initiative is expected to bridge workforce gaps in the healthcare sector, providing residents with better access to specialized medical care.
