The Ado-Ekiti State Federal High Court has granted Dele Farotumi, a prominent human rights lawyer, a bail of N50 Million.
This was made known by 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore, in a post on his X handle on Monday.
The tweet reads: “The first hurdle was crossed. #DeleFarotimi was granted bail of N50 million surety in the like sum with someone with landed property. The case was adjourned to January 29, 2025”.
Sowore noted in another post that Farotimi’s “farcical trial” would continue Tuesday at the Magistrate Court in the state capital.
The bail was set at ₦50 million, with the condition that a surety must provide the same amount and own a landed property.
Recall that Farotimi’s legal issues started from a defamation suit filed by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Afe Babalola, who accused him of making defamatory statements in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
In response to the accusations, the Lagos State Police Command apprehended Farotimi and transported to Ekiti for arraignment.
On Wednesday, December 7, 2024, Farotimi was remanded in prison custody by the Ado-Ekiti magistrate court following his arrest on 16 counts of criminal defamation.
