The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has recorded significant achievements in 2024, securing 4,111 convictions and recovering over ₦365.4 billion, according to the agency’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
Olukoyede made this known at the end of a three-day retreat for the commission’s directors in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, held on Saturday, with the theme “EFCC: The Journey So Far, Ensuring Professionalism and Integrity.”
A statement released by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Saturday quoted Olukoyede as saying the success was due to the commitment, sacrifice, and dedication of EFCC personnel.
He expressed confidence that the commission would exceed these achievements in 2025.
“In 2024, the commission secured 4,111 convictions and recovered over ₦365.4 billion. I appreciate the hard work and discipline of our personnel, and I urge even greater dedication to surpass this record in 2025. Strengthening integrity and processes will enhance public trust in the EFCC,” he said.
The EFCC chairman also reaffirmed his commitment to reforming and repositioning the commission, assuring that within the next six months, Nigerians would see a more effective and restructured EFCC.
The retreat featured discussions on the public’s perception of the EFCC and the challenges it faces.
Professor Tonnie Iredia, a resource person at the event, noted that negative views of the EFCC were often driven by deliberate distortions and cynicism rather than an accurate assessment of its work.
He commended Olukoyede’s leadership and called for greater public involvement in the fight against corruption.
Similarly, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), speaking on the evolution of the EFCC, said the commission had become a vital institution in Nigeria’s anti-graft war.
“The EFCC has come to stay. The commitment of Olukoyede and his team to advancing the fight against corruption is commendable.
However, challenges posed by the judiciary must be addressed to ensure the commission fully delivers on its mandate,” Falana stated.
The EFCC’s performance in 2024 stands as one of its most productive years, reinforcing its efforts to combat corruption, financial crimes, and economic sabotage across Nigeria.
