The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is not in custody.
This was revealed in a statement released on Wednesday by the commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, refuting media reports claiming that Bello was being held by the EFCC.
The statement emphasized that while Bello remains wanted, he has not been apprehended.
“Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello, is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, are incorrect. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody,” Oyewale said.
The EFCC had previously declared Yahaya Bello wanted in connection with alleged money laundering charges amounting to ₦80.2 billion. According to the EFCC, a warrant for his arrest is still in effect, and the commission continues its search for the former governor.
Bello’s status remains a matter of public interest as the EFCC intensifies efforts to bring him to justice.
