The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has provided clarification regarding a viral video alleging naira abuse at a high-profile wedding ceremony in Kano.
According to a press release issued on Monday evening by Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, the Commission confirmed that the incident indeed involved the spraying of naira notes but was incorrectly attributed to the wedding of Senator Danjuma Goje’s daughter, Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje.
The video, which circulated widely on social media over the weekend, showed individuals spraying Nigerian currency at a wedding held on Friday, October 24, 2024, in Kano.
The EFCC’s statement emphasised that, following a thorough analysis, it was determined the naira abuse took place at the wedding dinner of Amina Babagana Zannah, daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, also known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria, CEO of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise.
Haruna acknowledged the incident, stating that the guests involved in the naira and dollar spraying were members of the groom’s family, who hail from Niger Republic.
The groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, has been summoned to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja along with others involved in the alleged currency abuse.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to curbing naira abuse and highlighted the importance of its awareness campaign against currency mutilation.
“While we appreciate the public’s vigilance, the EFCC will not prosecute individuals wrongfully accused,” the statement read, reaffirming that no offender, regardless of status, would be spared in this ongoing campaign
