NIGERIA: EFCC Arrests TikTok Influencer Murja Kunya For Alleged Naira Mutilation

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Kano-based TikTok influencer Murja Ibrahim Kunya has been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly abusing and mutilating the Nigerian currency.
Kunya was taken into custody at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano, where she was allegedly seen spraying Naira notes for fun.
Her arrest comes after she jumped an administrative bail granted to her by the EFCC over a month ago, according to Dele Oyewale, Head of Media & Publicity at the EFCC.
The social media personality was initially arrested in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the Naira.
She was granted bail pending her arraignment before the Federal High Court in Kano but failed to appear for her court proceedings, prompting EFCC operatives to launch a manhunt.
After weeks of surveillance and investigation, Kunya was re-arrested on Sunday, March 16, 2025, and is now in custody at the EFCC’s Kano Zonal Directorate, awaiting arraignment.
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the Nigerian currency, warning the public against acts of Naira abuse such as spraying, stamping, or mutilation during social events.
The commission has vowed to ensure full enforcement of laws prohibiting such practices.
