Nigeria: 4 Dead, 36 Hospitalized as Cholera Hits Yola In Adamawa State
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
A suspected cholera outbreak has claimed four lives and left 36 others hospitalized in Yola-North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria.
The tragic news was confirmed by the Executive Chairman of the Council, Mr. Jibrin Ibrahim, during a visit to the victims at the Infectious Disease Control Centre (IDC) in Yola on Sunday.
The outbreak reportedly affected residents in Alkalawa, Ajiya, and Limawa wards. Mr. Ibrahim stated that the first cases were recorded with 20 patients, but the number of those infected quickly rose to 40, with four fatalities reported.
While many of the affected individuals are now stabilized and receiving ongoing care, Mr. Ibrahim praised the rapid intervention by health workers, the Red Cross, and international partners who have been instrumental in managing the situation.
The cholera outbreak is suspected to have been triggered by contaminated water sources; a problem worsened by recent flooding in the area.
Mr. Ibrahim called on the public to remain vigilant by maintaining clean environments, drinking only safe, potable water, and thoroughly washing vegetables and fruits to curb the spread of the disease.
