Popular Afrobeat singer, David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, is facing backlash for casting his first-ever vote in a United States election, sparking debate over his absence in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections.
The award-winning artist, known for his hit song ‘Awuke,’ revealed on his X (formerly Twitter) handle that he joined millions of Americans in Tuesday’s presidential election, choosing between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump.
Davido shared a photo of himself proudly displaying a sticker reading, “I’m a Georgia voter. I secured my vote!”
Earlier, the music star encouraged Americans on his X handle to exercise their voting rights safely. “Election day 🇱🇷 y’all be safe as you perform your constitutional rights,” Davido wrote.
However, his announcement drew mixed reactions, particularly from some South African users who questioned his commitment to Nigerian democracy.
A critic, Matthew George, commented, “Nigerians are a special people, they vote everywhere but in their own country.” Another user, identified as Bidden, alleged dishonesty, stating, “He’s lying, he picked that sticker from a trash bin.”
