By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
A High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to death by hanging for the brutal murder of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Salome Adaidu.
Justice Simon Aboki delivered the judgment on Thursday, ruling that Ajayi was guilty of culpable homicide after evidence proved that he not only killed but also dismembered the victim.
The case, which sparked outrage across the country, concluded with a conviction on a one-count charge of culpable homicide, an offence contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.
Salome Adaidu was reportedly serving her mandatory one-year national service in Nasarawa when she was murdered. Details of the investigation revealed chilling accounts of how Ajayi lured and murdered the young woman.
Delivering his judgment, Justice Aboki declared: “The prosecution has beyond reasonable doubt established the charge of culpable homicide. The only sentence in such a case is death by hanging.”
