NIGERIA: Court Denies Bail Request For Yahaya Bello In N110bn Fraud Case
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, has rejected the bail application of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who is facing allegations of money laundering involving N110 billion.
Bello, along with two other defendants, is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges related to the massive fraud. However, Justice Maryanne Anenih dismissed the bail request on Tuesday, ruling that the application was prematurely filed.
Justice Anenih stated that Bello’s bail request was not valid, as it was submitted when he was neither in the custody of the court nor before the court.
The judge emphasized that the application, therefore, lacked the necessary legal standing to be considered.
“This application, having been filed prematurely, is hereby refused,” Justice Anenih concluded, making clear the rejection of the request.
