The call for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe a former governor of Kano State and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has become the top trending topic on Nigerian Twitter as of Saturday.
Using the hashtag #EFCCProbeGandujeNow, Twitter users have posted numerous tweets demanding an investigation into Ganduje’s alleged corruption.
Posts included demands such as “Why is Ganduje being ignored even after shunning court five times while others are chased relentlessly?” and “If Ganduje’s hands are clean, why is he afraid of the probe for the Gandollar video? He should honor the court.”
The social media uproar follows concerns raised by over 100 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) under the Committee Against Oppression and Persecution (COMAP).
The CSOs criticised the EFCC for what they described as “selective persecution” of individuals perceived to be out of favour with certain political interests.
COMAP highlighted Ganduje’s repeated avoidance of court appearances, alleging he had shunned arraignment in a bribery and multi-billion-naira fraud case five times since April 2024.
Despite these allegations, the EFCC has reportedly not taken significant action against Ganduje.
In a statement, COMAP’s Chairman, Comrade Ibrahim Kure, and Secretary, Barr. Udoji Franklin, condemned the EFCC’s inaction and called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure the anti-corruption body pursues justice impartially.
They urged the President to prevent the EFCC from unfairly targeting some individuals while allowing others with serious allegations to evade justice.
The CSOs also pointed out other pending cases the EFCC has allegedly neglected, including a N70 billion money laundering allegation against former Governor of Nasarawa State, Bello Matawalle.
COMAP’s statement concluded by urging the EFCC to pursue a genuine fight against corruption and avoid being used as a tool for political vendettas.
