NIGERIA: Bobrisky Regains Freedom Following Detention Over Alleged Bribery Claims
By Utebor Paul, Nigeria
Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been released on bail following his recent detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Bobrisky was reportedly apprehended on Thursday night at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, while attempting to board a KLM flight to Amsterdam.
He was subsequently taken to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja for questioning over allegations related to bribery.
The accusations, which stemmed from a voice note shared online by social media critic Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, suggested that Bobrisky had paid N15 million to EFCC officials to dismiss previous money laundering charges against him.
On Friday night, however, Bobrisky was granted bail after reportedly completing the necessary formalities. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed his release but did not provide additional details on the case.
Sources within the EFCC disclosed that during the interrogation, Bobrisky denied all allegations of bribery. He reportedly challenged the authenticity of the voice note, demanding that the individual who posted it present evidence to substantiate the claims.
“He denied any involvement in bribing officials or paying any amount to halt charges,” the source stated. “In his statement, he insisted that no one from the EFCC demanded money from him, nor did he give any to secure his freedom.”
