NIGERIA: AY Makun Attributes Longevity In Entertainment to Grace, Not Age
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Veteran Nigerian comedian and filmmaker AY Makun has reaffirmed his relevance in the entertainment industry, stating that age has not diminished his impact or visibility.
In a recent Instagram post, the entertainer dismissed the notion that ageing automatically results in a fading career, instead attributing his continued success to divine grace.
AY, who has been active in the entertainment space for over a decade, made the remarks humorously, writing: “They said the spotlight dims with age… I guess I forgot the memo. Call it grace. StillRelevant AYNoDeyRetire.”
His statement comes amid growing conversations about longevity in Nigeria’s entertainment scene, where younger talents often dominate trends and media attention. However, AY’s continued engagement in film production, stand-up comedy, and live events reflects a sustained audience appeal and professional evolution.
Observers in the industry note that AY has successfully navigated the changing landscape by adapting to digital trends, investing in film production, and maintaining a consistent public presence.
Commenting on the post, entertainment analyst and culture commentator Tolu Ogunlesi said, “AY has built a brand that transcends just comedy. His relevance is the result of deliberate reinvention, business acumen, and a deep understanding of his audience.”
Over the years, AY has released successful comedy films, produced live shows across Nigeria and the diaspora, and collaborated with both emerging and established talents. Despite the influx of younger content creators, he remains a household name.
