NIGERIA: ASUU-LASU Declares Indefinite Strike Over Salary Increment
By Hamzat Ameenat Aderayo, Lagos, Nigeria
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University Branch, has announced the commencement of a total and indefinite strike action, effective from December 6, 2024.
The announcement was made in a statement released on December 8, 2024, signed by the Chairman of ASUU-LASU, Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare, and the association’s Secretary, Dr. Sylvester O. Idowu.
According to the statement, the strike is a protest against the non-implementation of the Federal Government’s approved salary increment of 25%/35% for their members, which has been pending since January 2023.
The association further stated that the strike action also aims to demand the harmonisation of salary disparities between Lagos State University staff and their counterparts at the Lagos State University of Education and the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, whose salaries are reportedly much higher.
ASUU-LASU called on students to remain calm, display a high level of maturity, and observe the developments.
The union also urged students to disregard the press release dated December 7, 2024, signed by the Lagos State University Students’ Union President and Public Relations Officer, which claimed that academic activities would continue despite the strike.
ASUU-LASU reiterated that the indefinite strike is in effect and advised the Students’ Union not to interfere in matters concerning staff welfare and the government.
