NIGERIA: Anambra Guber Candidate Vows To Pay N100,000 Minimum Wage
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the forthcoming Anambra State election, Chioma Ifemeludike, has pledged to raise the state’s minimum wage to ₦100,000 if elected, describing the move as a “practical commitment” rather than a political promise.
Ifemeludike made the pledge in a statement issued on Monday, following her participation in the just-concluded Anambra Governorship Debate organised by the Creative Mind Centre for Youth and Community Development in collaboration with Active Citizens Media, held in Awka last Friday.
She explained that the proposed wage increase would be achieved by cutting unnecessary government spending, blocking financial leakages, and expanding the state’s internally generated revenue through agriculture and innovation-driven enterprises.
“Our campaign isn’t built on empty promises or politics as usual. It’s a realistic, achievable plan to make governance work for the people,” she said.
During the debate, the AAC candidate outlined her blueprint for a “safer, smarter, and more inclusive Anambra.” She announced plans to establish a professionally trained Vigilante Agency that would operate within the law and strengthen community security networks.
On education, Ifemeludike promised to revamp public schools by updating curricula, improving infrastructure, and promoting both formal and informal learning systems. She also assured that youth empowerment and job creation would be central to her administration’s priorities through investment in vocational training and entrepreneurship support.
“We will mechanise agriculture and introduce modern technology to enhance productivity. Farmers will receive grants, loans, and equipment to increase output and ensure food security,” she added.
Ifemeludike, who has styled her campaign as one of inclusion and fairness, pledged that persons with disabilities would have active representation in her cabinet and decision-making processes.
“The reaction from Ndi Anambra at the debate was deeply encouraging. They connected with our message because it was built on practical, human-centred solutions, not abstract promises,” she noted.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has listed 16 candidates from various political parties for the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election, with incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance among the contenders.
