Nigeria – Alleged illegal mining: EFCC Detains Five Chinese Nationals

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained five Chinese nationals suspected of illegal mining activities in Ndito-Eka-Iba village, Ibieno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the EFCC spokesman, Mr Dele Oyewale confirmed that the arrests were carried out by the Special Task Force on Illegal Mining at the Commission’s Zonal office in Uyo.
According to Oyewale, the arrests were made following credible intelligence regarding unlawful mining operations by foreign companies in the Eket and Ibieno Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom.
The detained individuals include Zhon Qinping, who was arrested on 10 September, and Li Yi, Xie Bin, Chen Mou Zhou, and Chen Zeng, apprehended on 29 August. They were taken into custody at an illegal mining site where a mineral, believed to be ilmenite, was being extracted.
The suspects are expected to face legal proceedings once investigations are complete, Oyewale added.
