NIGERIA: Alaafin’s Wife Charges Govt To Empower Women In Rural Areas

By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The wife of the Alaafin of Oyo, Abiwumi Owoade, has called on the government to implement policies that empower women, particularly in rural areas.
Owoade said this in a statement issued by the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiyeedn, where she emphasized the critical role women play in national development, urging authorities to prioritize initiatives that enhance their economic opportunities.
She said: “As women, we are catalysts for change. Many have demonstrated resilience and creativity in overcoming challenges, fostering environments where democracy and governance thrive.”
The statement also reiterated that her husband, Oba Akeem Owoade, is committed to supporting programs that uplift women and improve their livelihoods.
Highlighting Nigeria’s estimated 55 million female population, Owoade stressed that women’s empowerment is essential for national progress.
She noted: “It is undeniable, empowering women means empowering the nation. Women are central to a country’s growth and stability.”
She also underscored the role of women as home builders and crisis managers, advising them to exercise caution in their interactions, especially during moments of anger.
Owoade warned: “A wise woman builds her home, while a reckless one tears it down. Even if you are the primary provider, choose your words carefully, careless statements can have lasting consequences.”
Owoade urged the government to increase awareness campaigns and policy interventions that support women’s financial independence, assuring that the Alaafin’s palace remains committed to advancing such initiatives.
“My husband will continue to support any program that strengthens women’s economic power, ensuring they achieve their full potential and contribute meaningfully to national development,” she affirmed.
