NIGERIA: Activist Inibehe Slams Lagos CP Over Comments On Quadri Alabi Case, Attends Meeting Despite Misgivings

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Human rights lawyer and activist, Inibehe Effiong, has expressed disappointment over recent remarks made by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, regarding the controversial arrest and detention of Quadri Alabi.
Quadri is a young Lagos resident who gained national attention after showing support for Peter Obi ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
Effiong, who is currently at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters alongside fellow activist Hassana Nurudeen for a meeting with the Commissioner of Police, criticized the CP’s comments on Channels Television earlier today.
He accused the CP of misrepresenting key facts in the ongoing case.
“We are however taken aback by the views and comments expressed this morning by the CP on Channels TV where he went out of his way to misrepresent the facts of the case,” Effiong said in a post on social media.
He added that “His comments are sad and enough reason for us to boycott the meeting. However, I’m inclined to still meet with him out of courtesy and respect for his office and we have nothing to hide.”
The activists claim the CP downplayed the illegality of Quadri’s detention and sought to justify the police’s actions, further fueling concerns over institutional accountability.
Effiong and Nurudeen, despite their disappointment, honored the police invitation for a meeting with the CP.
According to Effiong, the decision to attend was guided by a sense of duty and transparency. “We will keep you updated on the outcome of the meeting,” he added.
The case of Quadri continues to serve as a flashpoint in Nigeria’s battle against unlawful arrests and police brutality.
It also underscores the persistent tensions between security agencies and civil society groups working to ensure justice and due process.
