Nigeria – Abuja Earth Tremors: NGSA Calms Fears, Says No Environmental Threat
By Utebor Paul, Nigeria
The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has reassured residents of Mpape, Katampe, Maitama, and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following recent earth tremors in the area. The agency has advised the public to remain calm, noting that the situation is under control.
In a statement released by its Director General, Professor Olusegun Ige, NGSA confirmed that the tremors recorded in the affected areas were of low magnitude and do not pose a threat to the environment.
Professor Ige revealed that NGSA has been actively monitoring the tremors through its Katampe Monitoring Station (NGSA-5). The station has been capturing significant ground motions over the past five days, starting from September 13, 2024.
While the agency recorded only one mild tremor on September 13, it noted a sharp increase in activity on subsequent days. According to the statement, six events were recorded on September 14, while over 21 tremors with higher intensities were captured on September 15.
Despite the rise in ground motion activities, NGSA maintains that there is no cause for alarm and will continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant but calm, as the agency continues to assess the situation.
