NIGERIA: 33 Killed In Deadly Cattle Rustling Attack By Suspected Lakurawa Militants In Kebbi
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that 33 people were killed in an armed cattle rustling incident that occurred on Wednesday, in Bui District of Arewa Local Government Area.
The attack involved suspected Lakurawa militants who crossed into the district from Gudu Local Government Area in neighboring Sokoto State.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Bashir Usman stated that preliminary investigations indicate the armed group entered the area with the intent to rustle cattle.
Residents from communities including Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago mobilized to confront the attackers, resulting in a fatal clash.
Security agencies, working in collaboration with the military, have intensified operations in the affected area and deployed additional personnel to restore stability and maintain order.
Targeted efforts continue to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further incidents.
The command expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the Arewa community. Residents have been urged to report any suspicious movements and to avoid direct confrontations with armed criminals.
Lakurawa, designated a terrorist organization by Nigerian authorities in January 2025, operates primarily in northwestern Sokoto and northern Kebbi states along the border with Niger.
The group engages in cattle rustling, village raids, kidnappings for ransom, and other violent activities, often drawing from cross-border elements affiliated with Islamic State networks in the Sahel.
The incident reflects ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s northwest, where armed groups exploit rural vulnerabilities for livestock theft and territorial control.
Security forces have stepped up patrols in Arewa L
GA following the attack.
