By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Three soldiers were on Monday killed during a fierce battle with Boko Haram terrorists in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed the deaths in a statement released on Tuesday while also praising the bravery of the troops involved in repelling the attack.
The assault, carried out by terrorists mounted on gun trucks and motorcycles, targeted the 101 Special Forces Battalion stationed in the area.
The attackers attempted to breach the camp using a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) from the Gudumbali axis.
However, the Nigerian troops, supported by air strikes and unmanned aerial vehicles, fought back with overwhelming firepower, killing at least 12 terrorists in the process.
Despite the losses, the military was able to recover significant weapons and equipment, including five AK-47 rifles, an RPG bomb, anti-aircraft guns, and 40 motorcycles, among others.
Four out of seven VBIEDs deployed by the attackers were also destroyed during the engagement.
The acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, expressed condolences for the fallen soldiers while commending the troops for their resilience.
He urged them to continue the fight against the remnants of terrorism in the region.
“While we mourn the loss of these brave soldiers, their sacrifice underscores our commitment to eradicating terrorism in the Northeast,” the statement read. “Efforts are underway to ensure the security of the area, including house-to-house searches.”
